And I have no idea why exactly, because I really do love his books, but The Ocean at the End of the Lane has been one I've kind of avoided since it was published. I'll see it around, but I just haven't bothered to pick it up. Perhaps I should? I don't know.

Can I recommend Sarah Zettel's Dust Girl and the two books that follow it? I think maybe I've written here/other blog that this is not an isolated incidence. I think I read somewhere where Garzia magazine's editor (or some women higher up) was quite defensive in regards to her publication against the burgeoning beauty bloggers. This was must be back some years and now I realize that Garzia actually "employs" top bloggers/youtuber to make appearance on their website/articles. I think magazines have to start evolving in terms of their stance to bloggers or they, too, would suffer the many demise of newspapers (not necessarily the same correlation but nevertheless). I myself never been a particularly an avid magazine subscriber, apart from maybe... Oprah, Gourmet and Bon Appetit. O.k. add Martha Stewart back in the day :-) but yes, I agree that every time I pick up something like In-Style or Allure or Glamour in the waiting room (dr, salon, etc.) I can't help but to think/feel that the content is pretty light-weight and most of the stuffs are "recycled" from blogs I read already.Clairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18179420902933819052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589727970044632991.post-16483047507818537202014-12-23T01:18:56.519-05:002014-12-23T01:18:56.519-05:00Sounds like lovely books! It seems interesting to me that magazines would in some aspects try to liken themselves to blogs but still escape the standards of scrutiny and honesty that good bloggers strive for :/Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10222921812909264644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589727970044632991.post-88470848000572248992014-12-22T04:36:14.157-05:002014-12-22T04:36:14.157-05:00Hiii Toby! I'm not always a fan of Gaiman, but that one is beautiful. I don't really read through "women's" magazines anymore and haven't in a long time. Some of my favorites are Oh Comely, The Believer, Lucky Peach, The Gentlewoman, Dumbo Feather, Apartamento, etc. to name a few. I think you'd love some of those. :)

As for my favorite reads this year, I really enjoyed Peter Mendelsund's What We See When We Read, John Williams' Stoner, Joan Didion's Play it As it Lays, Jonathan Ames' I Love You More Than You Know, and the Saga graphic novels. :) Carinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01800735235011611849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589727970044632991.post-6830379953947307282014-12-20T19:54:43.434-05:002014-12-20T19:54:43.434-05:00I've read Graceling and Fire, and absolutely l...I've read Graceling and Fire, and absolutely loved them... you need to finish of the series with Bitterblue if you haven't already... some of my best reads of the past year for sure.

If you enjoy fantasy I would recommend Robin Hobb to you for 2015 :)Lucyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11736112244595109670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589727970044632991.post-1311725873079333392014-12-20T18:02:29.505-05:002014-12-20T18:02:29.505-05:00Delurking because BOOKS! :D

I find her writing plain, but I love the characters and how unflinchingly she deals with various subject matters. The books remind me of early Tamora Pierce, which I imprinted on as a young girl who loved fantasy. Also, have you read the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner? I think you would like them if not.Tobyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13939610374505755115noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589727970044632991.post-38022051421848284322014-12-20T16:52:51.618-05:002014-12-20T16:52:51.618-05:00The magazine-reading question came up in a xoVain ...The magazine-reading question came up in a xoVain weekly open thread recently and yes - most people are tired of them.
Blogs are waaay ahead of them with the writing, swatching and, most importantly, trustworthiness.

You made me consider another angle - yes, it does seem convoluted to point to those who use practices we tried to escape through blogs.Anahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07137019202329436322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589727970044632991.post-31192760939632022942014-12-20T11:51:37.074-05:002014-12-20T11:51:37.074-05:00The Goldfinch was a good one for sure and I'm ...The Goldfinch was a good one for sure and I'm near finished The Ocean at the End of the Laneabeautifulzenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06232935500750408509noreply@blogger.com
